The common stereotype of New York is shared by many. New Yorkers are often seen as having an attitude of superiority with little time to devote to anyone else (not even other New Yorkers). Within the stereotype is not to hold the door for anyone, and scoff the tourist who does. There are numerous jokes about tourists, due to time losses involving tourists unfamiliar with the habits of the city.
Unlike the rest of the United States, public transport is the most common form of travel for most residents of the city. The high parking rates and traffic congestion, discourage the use of private vehicles and the Metro New York, is quick, efficient and means the best alternative. There is also a large number of bus routes in the five boroughs. Walking is often an option for the locals to be a practical method of transport and enjoyable for trips under two miles. People living in the suburbs in the eastern part of Long Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and the rest of the state of New York handles or use the train system to travel to the city.The high tolls on bridges and underground tunnels mean more income for the city and discourage travelers to use the crossings. New Yorkers who live in the city have to take taxis, buses, subway and elevated trains. Boats (Ferries) are also used to travel to New Jersey, Staten Island and other parts of the city of New York.
